Fighting Saints compete with talented Fisher squad

College of St. Joseph's baseball team fell at Fisher College 14-2 and 10-0 on Sunday, April 7. Fisher improved to 30-12 on the year. The Fighting Saints are 8-9.

In game one at Fisher, Tristen Ciarlo recorded a double in the first at-bat of the contest. Lincoln Pritchard recorded a single to reach base and advance Ciarlo to third. Jeremy Johnson walked to load the bases with one out. Joseph Ruby was then waked, sending Ciarlo home for a run and a 1-0 lead in the game.

William Leino struck out the Falcons' first batter before Ivan Rivera unleashed a triple for the Falcons' first hit of the game. Mitchell Lundholm walked to reach base and promptly stole second. A John Batista single Rivera home to tie the game. Fisher took the lead in the bottom of the second frame after Jacob Deziel's groundout sent Ismael Perez home.

The Fighting Saints responded in the top of the third inning. Kyle Gould reached on a walk. Pritchard then reached first on an error at first base, which sent Gould all the way to third. Johnson once again walked to reach first and load the bases. Jason Albert's groundout allowed Gould to score and make the game even at 2.

CSJ then opened the bottom of the inning with a double play. Jonathan Rosado singled to put a runner back on base for the Falcons. A home run by Basista then gave Fisher a 4-2 lead. The Falcons went on to score once in the fourth before erupting for 5 runs in the fifth inning and 4 runs in the sixth.

Jose Galan threw 11 strikeouts for Fisher and earned the win on the mound. He allowed 2 hits and 2 runs in 6.0 innings. Jared Dane earned the save. He gave up no hits or runs in his one inning of action and threw one strikeout. Leino took the loss on the mound for CSJ. He allowed 8 hits, 5 runs in 4.0 innings and threw 2 strikeouts.

Game Two

Ciarlo and Gould got the second game going at the plate for CSJ, each connecting on a single to reach base. Pritchard then stepped up to produce a single and load the bases as the Saints' third at bat of the game. Johann Doerrer then went to work on the mound for Fisher, striking out CSJ's next two batters. A groundout sent the Saints to the dugout scoreless.

Sami Bibovic singled to get the Falcons on base. Cameron Pearson walked to put runners on first and second base. Mitchell Lundholm then grounded into a double play at shortstop, while Bibovic made it to third. CSJ's Jason Albert threw a strikeout to cap the first inning. In the second inning, Joseph Ruby recorded a single for the Saints. Albert did not allow a hit in the bottom of the second and struck out 2.

The third frame remained scoreless for both squads. Doerrer had one strikeout and gave up no hits and Albert matched his performance in the bottom of the third. The Falcons put runs on the board in the fourth inning after CSJ could not produce offensively in the top of the frame. Ivan Perez walked to reach base and stole second. Albert struck out the next batter but reached first base on an error by the catcher. Perez was able to round the bases on the play and score the first run of the game. A passed ball during the next at bat allowed pinch runner Reynaldo Vega to score a second unearned run for Fisher.

Trailing 2-0, Ciarlo singled to get a runner on for CSJ. Doerrer struck out one and a fly out ended CSJ's turn at the fifth inning. The Falcons broke out in the bottom of the frame. Pearson walked to reach base and Lundholm was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Jonathan Rosado was also hit by a pitch, loading the bases. John Batista then doubled, scoring Pearson and Lundholm. Perez stepped to plate next and singled, scoring bother Rosado and Batista.

After a pop up to second and a fly out, Pearson came to plate and drove a single to the outfield that batted in Bibovic and Jean Carlos Figueroa, who were hit by a pitch and walked, respectively. Two final Fisher runs were scored off wild pitches before a fly out ended the inning with 8 total runs and 3 hits.

Ahead 10-0, the Falcons tacked on 3 more runs in the bottom of the sixth to cap the scoring in the game. Albert singled to open the seventh frame for CSJ but a double play and strikeout concluded the contest.

The Fighting Saints got singles by Ciarlo, Gould, Pritchard, Albert, Ruby and Holmberg. Albert threw 5 strikeouts and allowed 9 runs and 3 hits in 4.2 innings on the mound. Johnson finished the game at pitcher and gave up 3 hits, 3 runs in 1.0 innings. Doerrer threw a complete game and picked up the win on the mound for Fisher. He threw 7 strikeouts and allowed 6 hits in 7 innings.
