College of St. Joseph's baseball team hosts Great Bay Community College (GBCC) on Saturday, April 6 at 1pm at St. Peter's Field in Rutland, Vt. The Fighting Saints' spring home opener is a doubleheader, with the second game scheduled to start at 3pm.
The Herons are 5-4 after the 2018 fall ball season. Saturday's games mark GBCC's first of the 2019 spring season.
GBCC's last game was on Oct. 7 at CSJ. The Fighting Saints won 10-2 behind pitchers Justin Holmberg and William Leino. Holmberg threw the first 6.0 innings, striking out 7 and allowing 5 hits, 2 runs. Leino threw 2 strikeouts and allowed no hits in his 3.0 innings on the mound. CSJ tallied 14 hits as a team during the fall match-up, while the Herons had 8 team hits.
Kyle Gould went 4-for-5 at the plate for CSJ with one double. He recorded 2 RBIs on the game. Mathew Santiago also performed well at the plate for the Saints. He had 3 hits, including a triple, 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Tristen Ciarlo had 2 hits, 1 RBI and 1 run. Great Bay's Jose Santiago and Jose Soto tallied 2 hits apiece.
Soto started on the mound for GBCC. He had 3 strikeouts and gave up 9 hits, 7 runs in the first 4.0 innings of play. Caleb Burpee and Mike Sterritt also pitched for the Herons. Read a full recap of the game here.
