College of St. Joseph's women's basketball team picked up their seventh win of 2019 on Thursday (Feb. 7), defeating Green Mountain College 65-52. Senior NaKeeya Goodman-Boddie was one rebound shy of a double-double as she recorded 10 assists, 9 rebounds, 5 points, 2 steals and 2 blocks on her Senior Night.
The Lady Saints surged to a 21-8 lead after the first quarter. Rachel Bruneel paced CSJ with 7 points and 4 rebounds in the quarter. Alayah Sweeney had 5 points, 2 rebounds and Goodman-Boddie had 4 assists, 3 rebounds.
The Eagles did let their first quarter woes distract them, coming back to outscore CSJ 19-18 in the second frame. Mercedes Rideout had 7 points, 2 rebounds for GMC and Leanna Mason had 6 points, 3 rebounds. Daija Black and Jayla Latham had 4 points apiece in the quarter and Latham notched 5 rebounds. The Fighting Saints went into halftime leading 39-27.
CSJ had the upper hand in the third frame, scoring 17 points to GMC's 11. Bruneel led the Saints with 6 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist and 1 block in the quarter. Sabrena Eye had 4 points, 1 rebound and 1 steal while Black tallied 4 points and 3 rebounds. Madison Akin had 4 assists in the quarter and Goodman-Boddie had 4 rebounds. Sharena Armstrong led the Eagles with 5 points, 2 rebounds.
GMC trailed 56-38 going into the final frame. The Eagles deployed a full-court press and forced the Saints into 8 fourth-quarter turnovers. Armstrong's 9 points in the quarter allowed GMC to edge CSJ 14-9 in the final frame. Armstrong finished with a game-high 17 points and had 9 rebounds and 2 assists.
CSJ's strong defense and sound rebounding allowed the Saints to carry their lead throughout the contest. The Fighting Saints forced GMC into 28 turnovers and scored 24 points off turnovers. GMC forced CSJ into 19 turnovers and scored 9 points off turnovers. CSJ out-rebounded the Eagles 58-45 and had 21 team assists to GMC's 10 assists.
CSJ was led by Bruneel, who finished with 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. Eye had 12 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 assist and 1 block. Sweeney finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds and Black had 10 points, 6 rebounds 2 assists and 2 steals.
The Lady Saints (10-11) play next at New Hampshire Technical Institute on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 2:15 pm. Green Mountain dropped to 6-16 on the season with the loss.
