College of St. Joseph's softball team defeated Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) 7-1 in a Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) semifinal matchup on Saturday, May 5. CSJ pitcher McKenzie Ebert threw a complete game with three strikeouts in the high-stakes contest.
The win puts the Lady Saints in the YSCC championship game along with New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI), who defeated Central Maine. A live broadcast of the game, which is tabbed to start at 6:30 p.m. on May 5, can be heard via the following link: http://www.mcisaaconsports.com/
SMCC scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. CSJ went scoreless in their next two chances at the plate and trailed 1-0 for two straight innings.
Then came the third inning, wherein the Lady Saints recorded two hits and three runs to take control of the game. Sierra Jaeger recorded a single and joined Arielys Rodriguez on base. Rodriguez walked to reach base, stole second, and made it to third base on Jarger's single to left center field.
Timell Montgomery reached first base on an error by the Seawolves' center fielder and both Rodriguez and Jaeger were able to score on the play, giving the Saints a 2-1 lead. Next to the plate was Shelby Fenton, whose single to right field scored Montgomery and put CSJ up 3-1.
The Lady Saints scored two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to earn the 7-1 victory. Jaeger put on one of her best performances at the plate, which included a two-run homer in the sixth inning. She finished with three hits, three RBI and two runs. First-year player Ebert earned the win on the pitcher's mound.
