CSJ set to play Southern Maine in YSCC semis

College of St. Joseph's softball team will play in Yankee Small College Conference tournament on Saturday, May 5. The Lady Saints face Southern Maine Community College at Alumni-Wentworth Field in Portsmouth, N.H. at 4:30 p.m. The YSCC tournament is being hosted by Great Bay Community College.

The Lady Saints received the #2 seed in the tournament after posting a 5-3 record in conference play this year. The Seawolves are ranked #3 going into Saturday's YSCC tournament.

The two teams last played each other on Sunday, April 8 in South Portland, Maine. CSJ picked up a 9-5 victory in game one of the doubleheader. Jenna Crowley threw 5.2 innings and McKenzie Ebert played 1.1 on the mound for the Lady Saints.

Crowley threw five strikeouts and limited the Seawolves to six hits. Ebert threw two strikeouts in her short time on the mound and gave up zero hits. The Lady Saints recorded 16 hits as a team to SMCC's six. CSJ went down 1-0 after inning one but bounced back with four runs in the second inning. The Lady Saints did not trail again throughout the game.

The Seawolves scored in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the game a 6-3 contest, but CSJ once again had an answer and tallied three runs in the sixth inning to bring their run total to 9. SMCC put two more on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Neither team notched a run in the seventh inning and the game ended 9-5 in favor of CSJ.

Sierra Jaeger led the Lady Saints offense with four hits, three runs and one RBI. Shelby Fenton tallied three hits, one run and one RBI. Montgomery recorded a three-run homer.

The second regular season matchup between the two squads was a 6-4 win for the Seawolves. CSJ had a 3-1 lead after 3.5 innings of play, but a five-run inning for SMCC in the bottom of the fourth proved to be enough to stay ahead of the Lady Saints.

Shelby Fenton played 3.2 innings on the pitcher's mound and Crowley closed. Fenton recorded one strikeout and took the loss on the mound. Kali Drum shined offensively with four hits and one run. Vanessa Quigley had three hits, one run and Jaeger recorded three hits, one RBI.

Meranda Martin has been the biggest contributor at the plate for SMCC. She had 48 hits on the year, including five doubles, four triples and two home runs. She has a .453 batting average. Sara Ring has a .453 batting average and team-high 42 RBI on the year. Kristen Mackenzie has seen the most time on the pitcher's mound, with 94 innings pitcher. She has a 11-7 record.

Fenton and Arielys Rodriguez lead the Lady Saints with 44 hits apiece thus far. Rodriguez has notched three doubles, a triple and 11 RBI. Fenton leads the team with 28 RBI and a .431 batting average. Quigley has recorded seven doubles and 18 RBI for CSJ.

The winner of Saturday's semifinal between CSJ and SMCC will play the winner of the New Hampshire Technical Institute (#1) vs. Central Maine Community College (#4) semifinal in the YSCC title game at roughly 6:30 p.m. Live radio broadcasts of the games can be found here: http://www.mcisaaconsports.com/
