College of St. Joseph's softball team fell 3-2 and 9-1 in a doubleheader against New Hampshire Technical Institute on Thursday, May 3.
The Lady Saints had a 2-0 lead for 5.5 innings in game one. Their two runs came in the opening inning of play.
Senior co-captain Shelby Fenton then hit a double to right field that sent Jaeger to third base and Tirotta home for the first score of the game. Jaeger, a junior from Weedsport, N.Y., then capitalized on a passed ball by NHTI's catcher and sprinted home to score the Saints' second run.
The Lady Saints did not allow a batter to reach base in the bottom of the first. In the bottom o fht second, senior pitcher and co-captain Jenna Crowley struck out three batters in a row to send CSJ back to the batter's box for the top of the third inning. The Lynx recorded the only hit of the third, however.
Fenton recorded a single for the Lady Saints in the fourth frame. In the bottom of the sixth, NHTI tallied four hits and two runs for a late rally that tied the game 2-2. CSJ did not manage to record a hit in the seventh inning.
During NHTI's chance at the plate in the seventh, Masha Lange led off with a single to shortstop. Danyel McNicholas then executed a sacrifice bunt to advance Lange to second base. Briana Connolly stepped to the plate and recorded her only hit of the game at the perfect time. Her single to left field allowed Lange to round the base and score game-winning run.
Fenton finished with two hits, one RBI. Jaeger had one hit, one run and Tirotta recorded a run. Crowley threw a complete seven-inning game. She recorded three strikeouts and allowed eight hits.
CSJ was more successful at the plate in game two, though the 9-1 score does not indicate such. The Saints recorded five hits throughout the five-inning game, whereas in game one they totalled three.
Arielys Rodriguez led off the first inning with a single to shortstop, and Jaeger singled to left field. Tirotta was walked in between and the bases were loaded for CSJ to start the game. A fly out, strikeout and foul out quickly ended the Saints' hopes of scoring a first-inning run. In the bottom of the inning CSJ kept the Lynx scoreless, as well.
NHTI got the bats going in the bottom of the second, recording four hits during the frame. They scored two earned and two unearned runs to take a 4-0 lead. Tirotta singled to center field in the third frame. She advanced to second base on a passed ball but was left on base.
Crowley took the mound in the bottom of the inning for CSJ and limited the Lynx to one hit and zero runs during the third. Kali Drum walked to reach base in the fourth, but the Saints struggled to connect on a hit and she was left on base.
A home run by NHTI's Piper Cote put the Lynx up 5-0. NHTI recorded three more hits and another run before the fourth inning came to a close.
Rodriguez singled to center field to kick of the fifth. She advanced to second when Tirotta singled to left. Jaeger was able to reach first on an error by NHTI's first baseman and Rodriguez rounded the bases for a run in the process, making the game 6-1. NHTI's Lange managed a three-run homer in the bottom of the inning to cap the game 9-1.
First-year player McKenzie Ebert took the loss on the mound for the Lady Saints. Crowley played the last 2.1 innings and recorded three strikeouts. Rodriguez finished with two hits, one run. Tirotta also notched two hits. Jaeger recorded one.
The Lady Saints finished 5-3 in Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) play this season. The post-season tournament begins Saturday, May 5 and will be hosted by Great Bay Community College in Portsmouth, N.H. CSJ is scheduled to play Southern Maine Community College for a YSCC semifinal game on May 5 at 4:30 p.m.
