College of St. Joseph's softball team put up a combined 40 runs in two wins against Great Bay Community College on Saturday, April 28. The Lady Saints defeated the Herons, who are in their first year as a program, 17-0 and 23-4 on Saturday.
First-year player Timell Montgomery recorded two home runs in the first contest.
In game one, Arielys Rodriguez got the bats going with a leadoff double. Vanessa Quigley the singled to reach base and Sierra Jaeger was walked to make the bases loaded. Rodriguez scored the first run of the game off a passed ball error by GBCC's catcher.
Next to the plate was Montgomery, who recorded a three-run home run on her first at-bat of the day. She gave the Saints a 4-0 lead after inning one. In the second, CSJ increased their previous inning's run total to five. Rodriguez, Quigley, Jaeger and Montgomery recorded hits.
The Lady Saints did not tally a run in the third inning, but were back to their scoring way in the fourth, recording seven runs to increase their lead to 16-0. Shelby Fenton tallied her first single of the game during the inning.
The final run came from Montgomery's second home run of the day - this time, though, she was the only CSJ player to round the bases on the play. The California native finished with three hits, including two homers. Rodriguez recorded three singles and a double for a game-high four hits. Quigley had four singles to match that tally. Jaeger finished with two hits.
The second game of the day began in a more competitive fashion. The Herons were the first to score, and built a 3-1 lead after the first inning of play. The Lady Saints bounced back in the second inning and put six runs on the scoreboard to earn a 7-3 advantage in the game. Quigley and McKenzie Ebert recorded hits during the inning to aid in the Saints' comeback effort.
GBCC tallied a run in the top of the third inning, but were then barraged by eight CSJ runs in the bottom of the third.
With a 15-4 lead, the Saints scored eight runs in the fourth inning. The Herons were not able to score in the top of the fifth and game capped with the score at 23-4. Quigley had four singles and Katie Jenkins recorded three. Lena Tirotta recorded a single and a double.
The Lady Saints play next on Thursday, May 3 at New Hampshire Technical Institute at 3:30 p.m. The game has been rescheduled twice since Friday, April 27 due to rain and soaked field conditions.
