College of St. Joseph's softball team heads to Pennsylvania for a string of games against Penn State Brandywine and Penn State Hazleton. The first matchup is a doubleheader versus Brandywine on Friday, March 16 with game times set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The Lady Saints are 3-7 overall. During fall ball, CSJ picked up wins over Southern Maine Community College (to the tune of 9-2), Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC) defending champions New Hampshire Technical Institute (a 3-1 decision) and Great Bay Community College (9-3). The Brandywine Lions are 2-4 on the year after a tournament in Clermont, Fla. They defeated Mitchell College 27-6 and UMaine Presque Isle 8-0.
CSJ performed well against strong competition during their recent trip to Cocoa Beach, Fla. but were unable to pull out a win through five games. However, the Saints took away valuable playing experience against the veteran teams they faced in Florida. In their second game on March 8, CSJ played two-time defending United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Champions St. Mary of the Woods College and put together a thrilling contest.
The Fighting Saints were scoreless through the first four innings of play and amassed a six-run deficit. But in the top of the fifth inning, CSJ senior co-captain Shelby Fenton stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded in front of her and hit a grand slam to bring the game within two runs. Later in the inning, Sierra Jaeger and Timell Montgomery were sent home to tie the game off a well placed single by Jenna Crowley. With the pressure on, the Pomeroys scored seven straight runs and ultimately defeated CSJ 13-8.
Newcomer Vanessa Quigley leads the CSJ offense with 15 total hits and a .484 batting average. She has recorded eight RBIs and seven runs. Classmate Arielys Rodriguez has notched a team-leading 11 runs and 14 hits to go along with a .424 batting average. Fellow first-year Fighting Saint Lena Tirotta has also proved to be an offensive force as she boasts a .419 batting average and has collected 13 hits, including two home runs and two doubles. She has driven home nine runs and scored nine of her own.
Senior co-captain and starting pitcher Crowley has tallied 12 hits, eight RBIs and four runs. On the mound she is 1-1 and has struck out 12 batters. Fenton has 11 hits, nine RBIs and six runs and Montgomery has contributed 7 hits (with three doubles and a triple) and three RBIs.
Rachel Cherubini leads the Lions with 10 RBIs, four runs, two stolen bases and a .421 batting average. Haley Grossi owns a .429 batting average and has recorded five runs and four RBIs. Katie DeStefano is 2-4 on the pitching mound for Brandywine. She has 14 strikeouts thus far in 33 innings played.
The Lady Saints hope to draw on experience from their time in Florida and convert wins during their four upcoming games in Pennsylvania. To follow live stats during the game, go to: http://www.psubrandywineathletics.com/sports/sball/2017-18/boxscores/20180316_28sy.xml
