Lynx edge Saints

College of St. Joseph's baseball team traveled to New Hampshire Technical Institute on Wednesday, April 10 and fell 8-2.

The Lynx benefitted from a 3-run start during their first turn at the plate. Jason Taylor recorded the only hit of the inning, though, in NHTI's first at bat. He singled to left field and went on to steal second base. The next two batters were either hit by a pitch or walked. Another walk scored Taylor. Two more runs were scored in similar fashion before a CSJ pitcher Lincoln Pritchard recorded his third strikeout of the first inning after subbing into the game.

Neither team recorded a hit in the second inning. The Fighting Saints got on the board in the third when William Leino was walked, allowing Jason Albert to score the first CSJ run of the game. Chris Campi opened the bottom of the third with a single to second base. He stole second, and then third on a wild pitch. A double by Michael Tolman send Campi home to put the Lynx ahead 4-1. Pritchard had two strikeouts on the inning.

Jeremy Johnson sent a single to left field in the top of the fourth. NHTI tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the inning - one on a passed ball and one off a walk. In the seventh inning, Johnson walked to reach base for CSJ. Ruby's sacrifice bunt sent Johnson to second base. He then stole third. Albert grounded out to shortstop and recorded an RBI as Johnson scored on the play.

Ciarlo hit a single to center field in the eighth inning and then stole second, but two groundouts and line out squashed CSJ's hope of recovering some of their 8-2 deficit during the inning. In the ninth, Mathew Santiago drove a single to center field. Ruby followed suit, sending Santiago to second base. A groundout by Albert advanced the CSJ runners to second and third bases. However NHTI pitcher Adam Young threw a strikeout to conclude the game.

NHTI's starting pitcher Tyler Sargent picked up the win. He allowed 1 run, 1 hit in his 5.0 innings on the mound and threw 6 strikeouts. CSJ starting pitcher Justin Holmberg took the loss. Pritchard allowed 2 hits, 1 run in 3.0 innings and recorded 6 strikeouts. Ruby threw 5.0 innings for CSJ and allowed 4 hits, 4 runs while striking out two.

Johnson finished with 1 hit, 1 run. Albert had 1 run, 1 RBI and Ruby, Ciarlo and Santiago each recorded singles. The Fighting Saints play next against Central Maine Community College on Friday, April 12 at Lewiston High School at 1pm.
