College of St. Joseph's baseball team recorded a 10-2 victory over Great Bay Community College (GBCC) in their final fall game of 2018 on Sunday, Oct. 7.
Justin Holmberg and William Leino combined to strike out nine batters. Homberg threw the first six innings, striking out seven and allowing five hits and two runs. Leino allowed four hits and zero runs in three innings on the mound.
Jose Soto was on the mound for the Herons in the first four innings and recorded three strikeouts. He gave up nine hits and seven runs to take the loss for Great Bay. Caleb Burpee walked four, struck out one, and allowed three runs and two hits in 2.2 innings of play.
The Fighting Saints went ahead 2-0 after the second inning. Great Bay cut CSJ's lead in half in the fourth inning and made the game 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth, the Saints went off for seven runs. GBCC recorded a run in the top of the sixth, but CSJ did not allow another run for the remainder of the nine inning contest and tacked on another for themselves in the bottom of the seventh.
CSJ was led offensively by senior Kyle Gould and sophomore Mathew Santiago. Gould went 4-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and one run. Santiago was 3-for-4 and recorded three RBI and two runs. Tristen Carlo also had a multi-hit performance and finished with two hits, one run and one RBI. Santiago and Carlo each recorded a triple, while Gould and Benny Pena had doubles.
GBCC's record fell to 5-4. The Fighting Saints finished the fall season with a record of 7-2.
