Loschiavo, Brown shine in World Series first round loss

College of St. Joseph's baseball team fell 5-2 to #10 Selma University in the first round of the USCAA World Series on Monday, May 14. CSJ (#7) will play Wright State University-Lake Campus (#3) next on Tuesday, May 15 at 1:30 p.m.

Monday's game saw Selma put up five quick runs between the first and second innings. The Bulldogs recorded two hits in each of the innings before Fighting Saints pitcher Ben Brown shut down all hope in the batter's box for the remainder of the contest.

CSJ was unable to capitalize on Brown's eight-strikeout, five-inning shutout performance, as the Saints had two total hits (to Selma's collective four). A hit by John Loschiavo got CSJ on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Three CSJ batters were walked before Loschiavo stepped to the plate and singled to center field to allow Jedion Cras and Kyle Gould to make it across home plate and cut the Saints' deficit to 5-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Loschiavo recorded another single, this one dropping into right field, that allowed Cras to reach second (he was walked to initially). However, there were two outs on the board and the next CSJ batter struck out, sealing the game at 5-2.

Loschiavo finished with two hits, two RBI -  accounting for every hit the Saints could muster. Cras and Gould finished with a run apiece. Brown allowed just four hits and struck out eight.

Bulldogs pitcher Derrick Sylve recorded 10 strikeouts, eight walks and gave up two hits and two runs in seven innings.

The Fighting Saints are not strangers to facing adversity in the USCAA World Series, as last year they found themselves in a similar position before clawing their way to a USCAA title. Their next opponent, Wright State University, went 18-15 this year. The Lakers lost in their first game of the World Series yesterday 9-1 to hosts Penn State DuBois. Isaac Fitzgerald and Connor Burr each had two of the Lakers' five total hits on the game.
