CSJ rallies to defeat Pine Manor

College of St. Joseph's baseball team defeated Pine Manor College 4-3 on Saturday, May 5 in walk-off fashion.

Jeremy Johnson recorded his first home run of the year to tie the game at one in the third inning. Brian Quezada and Petar Rumora recorded singles in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs on the scoreboard. Zach Mattos threw a complete game with four strikeouts to earn the win on the mound.

Pine Manor took the lead in the game early when Randal Adams hit a double that sent Brian Jones, who reached base on an error, across home plate for the Gators' first run of the day.

Mattos struck out the next two batters to send CSJ to the dugout for their turn at the plate. Rumora recorded a long single in the bottom of the first that sent Benny Pena running for home, but he was throw out at the plate.

Mattos struck out one in the second inning and did not give up a hit. CSJ catcher Jion Cras threw a runner out attempting to steal second base to conclude PMC's turn on offense. CSJ did not record a hit in the bottom of the second.

In the bottom of the third, Johnson sent a ball over the left field fence, cracking a windshield in the process, to tally his first home run of the year and tie the game up at one-all. Mattos threw another hitless inning in the top of the fourth frame. Cras recorded a single that sent Rumora to third base in the bottom of the fourth, but a CSJ groundout finished the inning.

The Gators regained their lead in the top of the fifth. After one batter walked, Jonathan Higgenbotham tripled and earned a RBI. Salvador Cimino recorded his first hit of the game on a double in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, Pine Manor further extended their advantage. Adams hit a triple to leadoff the inning and was sent across home plate when Eduary Baez hit a single. The next PMC batter flied out and the following two grounded out.

Ernesto Figueroa kept CSJ in the game with a triple to center field that allowed Kameron Broussard, who reached on a fielder's choice, to score and make the game 3-2. Jones tripled for Pine Manor in the seventh but was left on base.

Cimino singled to reach base in the bottom of the seventh after CSJ's leadoff batter recorded a strikeout. The next batter flied out to center field. With two outs on the board, Quezada sent a long single - his first hit of the game - that allowed Cimino to go from first base to home in one swift dash to tie the game at three. Mathew Santiago subbed into the game to pinch run for Quezada.

With Santiago on first, Rumora stepped into the batter's box. He hit a ball that soared to center field with speed. The Gators' fielder was not in proper position to make the catch, and as Santiago sped towards home, he committed an error on the play. Santiago scored the game winning run off Rumora's walk-off single.

Cimino finished the game with two hits, one run. Rumora tallied two hits, one RBI. Johnson homered. Quezada and Figuera had one hit, one RBI. Mattos allowed just five hits and three runs while recording four strikeouts for his fifth win of the year.
