College of St. Joseph's baseball team defeated Pine Manor College 13-0 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday, May 5. Senior starting pitcher Ben Brown recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts and allowed just two hits through six innings.
Brown got the game started by recording three consecutive strikeouts, allowing the Fighting Saints just a short time on defense before their turn at the plate.
John Loschiavo and Salvador Cimino walked to put CSJ runners on first and second in the bottom of the first inning. Brian Quezada singled for first hit of the day and loaded the bases for CSJ. Petar Rumora recorded a RBI when he was hit by a pitch and advanced to first base, which sent Loschiavo across home plate for the first run of the game. Cimino scored next when Benny Pena grounded out to shortstop, putting the Saints up 2-0 after the first inning.
Brown then struckout the next two Pine Manor batters and forced the third to ground out to Cimino at second base. CSJ's Loschiavo and Quezada recorded singles in the bottom of the inning, but the Saints weren't able to round the bases for a score in the second frame.
The third inning saw Brown mimic his first-inning performance on the mound, striking out the first three and only PMC batters of the inning. The Fighting Saints, on the other hand, recorded three hits and five runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead in the game. Kyle Gould tallied a RBI when his single send Pena home for the first run of the third. Cimino notched three RBI off a double he sent to left field. Quezada recorded the final RBI of the inning when his single sent Cimino home.
Brown raised his strikeout count on the game to 11 when he again struck out the first three batters he faced. Through the fourth frame he allowed the Gators zero hits. He recorded his twelfth strikeout of the game in the fifth inning.
Pine Manor's Eduary Baez singled down the right field line to notch the Gators' first hit of the game in the fifth frame. He was soon after thrown out on a double play by the Saints defense.
The Fighting Saints went off for four hits and six runs during the fifth inning. Gould leadoff with a double. Loschiavo walked and Cimino recorded a single. Quezada recorded hit fourth hit of the game and sent Gould and Loschiavo home in the process to put CSJ up 9-0.
Brown walked with the bases load and notched a RBI as Cimino scored on the play. Ahead 10-0, Mauricio Rondon hit a double to right field and recorded three RBI. Pena and pinch runners Jason Albert and Mathew Santiago made it across home plate off Rondon's double.
PMC's Jonathan Higgenbotham recorded a hit off an error by CSJ, but the Gators could not manage a run during the inning.
CSJ senior pitcher Luis Ramos closed for the Fighting Saints. He allowed zero hits.
Quezada finished the game with three RBI and 4-for-4 at the plate. Cimino recorded two hits, three RBI and three runs. Gould had two hits, two runs. Rondon notched three RBI, one hit and a run.
