College of St. Joseph's baseball squad won the second game of a doubleheader versus the University of South Carolina - Beaufort 3-1 on Friday, April 6. Ben Brown recorded two RBI and Zachery Mattos struck out two batters in the seventh inning to take the victory.

CSJ's Mattos and USCB's Ryan Reynolds battled on the mound throughout the contest. Mattos threw a career-best seven strikeouts and both pitchers allowed five hits. Brown and Brian Navarro recorded RBIs for the Fighting Saints.

John Loschiavo singled to left field in the first at bat of the game. Salvador Cimino bunted and reached first to put two runners on base. Brian Quezada hit a sacrifice fly to center field that sent Loschiavo to prime scoring position. Brian Navarro gounded out to first and collected a RBI a Loschiavo made it home safely for the only run of inning. USCB went hitless in the bottom of the inning and Mattos struck out one.

Innings two through four went scoreless and the fifth was on track to end the same after the first half, but USCB's Cole Hamilton ended up scoring the Sand Sharks' first run off a balk with two outs on the scoreboard. Neither team recorded a hit in the sixth, but the Fighting Saints turned two hits into two runs in the top of the seventh.

Ernesto Figuera doubled to left field to kick off the inning. Benny Pena was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second base. Both runners advanced, Figuera to third and Pena to second, off a wild pitch against Petar Rumora. Rumora intentionally walked. Brown stepped to the batter's box next. His single through the left side of the field sent both Figuera and Pena around the bases to record the game's go-ahead runs.

Mattos struck out two batters in the bottom of the seventh inning to help prevent an answer by the Sand Sharks and seal the 3-1 win.

Loschiavo and Figuera finished the game with one hit, one run for CSJ. Navarro had one hit, one RBI and Brown recorded two RBI of his seventh-inning single. Cimino singled on his first at bat.
