Fighting Saints ready for doubleheaders versus USCB

College of St. Joseph's baseball team is en route to Hardeeville, S.C. for four games against the University of South Carolina - Beaufort (USCB). The doubleheaders will take place on Friday, April 6 and Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. both days.

Beaufort is 14-20 overall and 3-13 in The Sun Conference. The Sand Sharks and Fighting Saints have faced four common opponents this year. Between Feb. 16 and Feb. 17, USCB played three games against Southeastern University and lost 7-6, 6-4, and 9-3, respectively. CSJ faced the Fire on March 16 and 17 in four contests and fell 13-4, 2-0, 9-0 and 14-2.

USCB went 2-1 against Florida Memorial University. The first game on Feb. 23 was an 18-8 win for the Sand Sharks pitched by Zac Burke, who threw two strikeouts and gave up nine hits and eight runs in 5.2 innings. In the latter game of the doubleheader, starting pitcher Nick Constan threw a complete game in the 4-1 victory. He gave up four hits and set a school record with 17 strikeouts in a single game. The Sand Sharks fell 15-14 in a contest on Feb. 24. Daniel Wagner gave up seven hits and six runs and struck out two in his 5.1 inning of action. Ryan Pederson ultimately took the loss on the mound.

The Fighting Saints went 1-1 against Florida Memorial on March 26. The first game of the doubleheader was a narrow 5-4 loss for CSJ. The Saints rallied from being down three to go up 4-3 after four innings, but two late runs by the Lions scored two late runs in the seventh and eighth innings to seal the victory. John Loschiavo had two hits, one run and one RBI. Brian Navarro and Brian Quezada each had one hit, one RBI apiece. Ben Brown threw a complete game with six strikeouts.

The second game of the day against FMU resulted in a 4-0 Fighting Saints win. CSJ scored four runs in the first inning and were able to preserve their lead for the remainder of the game. Zachery Mattos picked up the victory on the mound. He recorded six strikeouts and gave up just four hits through his complete game on the mound. Loschiavo and Dillon Maxon had two hits each. Loschiavo, Benny Pena, Salvador Cimino and Kameron Broussard scored runs. Brown and George Ostrowski notched one hit, one RBI apiece.

USCB played Warner University and went 1-2. On March 16 Beaufort fell 13-3 against the Royals. Burke took the loss on the mound. He gave up eight hits and 10 runs in 5.1 innings, while striking out two.

On March 17 the Sand Sharks took the first game against Warner 12-1. Zach Hall threw four strikeouts and gave up two hits and one run in five innings to take the win. The Royals scored their only run in the first inning to go up 1-0, but USCB took a 2-1 lead after the third inning, a 4-1 lead after the fifth, and had an eight-run eighth inning. Nick Delbianco led offensively with three hits, three RBI and one run. Alex Murphy tallied two hits and three runs. In the second game of the day of the Sand Sharks lost 18-7. Murphy recorded his sixth home run of the year in the loss.

CSJ played an exciting game at Warner University on March 25. The Fighting Saints recorded 20 hits as a team and the Royals tallied 21. The two squads traded the lead seven times throughout the contest, but Warner came out with the 19-13 win thanks in part to a five-run eighth inning. Petar Rumora recorded a season-high four RBI while also recording three runs and two hits. Brown notched three hits, two RBI and two runs. Loschiavo had three hits, three runs. Quezada went 4-for-5 at the plate and had one RBI, one run. Sage McCoy threw a game-high three strikeouts.

USCB has also squared off against #21 St. Thomas University, who CSJ played twice last week during their trip to Florida. The Sand Sharks lost to the Bobcats 13-2 on March 23, and 10-0 and 7-3 on March 24. CSJ battled STU on March 27 and fell 6-3 despite an early 3-2 lead. Luis Ramos pitched a complete game and threw three strikeouts. Rumora had two hits, two RBI to lead CSJ offensively. On March 29, the Bobcats collected a 19-4 win over the Saints.
