College of St. Joseph's Fighting Saints baseball team was swept by Loyola University-New Orleans to the tune of 4-1 and 3-2 on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Loyola was propelled by strong hitting in game one, recording 11 hits. CSJ made it onto the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning. John Loschiavo singled to shortstop to open the inning. Jedion Cras then singled to right field, allowing Loschiavo to advance to second. Brian Quezada singled to center to allow Cras to advance to second, and Loschiavo was thrown out at third. Petar Rumora earned an RBI when he reached first base on a Loyola error and Cras made a break for home plate, causing the Saints to take a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Loyola's Allen Dennis doubled to left field before his pinch runner Jase Biehl was able to score on a single from Charlie Seiter. The game remained tied until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Nathan Law hit a double that sent Rawlings Elam home and gave the Wolfpack a one run lead. CSJ was unable to score in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Loyola's Spencer Rosenbohm doubled to left field to send two more runners home and cap the game at 4-1.
Jedion Cras finished the game with three of CSJ's nine hits, including the only double, and also accounting for the Fighting Saints' one run. Quezada notched two hits and Loschiavo, Rumora, Jason Albert and Benny Pena each recorded one hit apiece. Ryan Cummings struck out four batters and closer Salvador Cimino struck out one.
In the second contest, the Fighting Saints outhit the Wolfpack 5-4. CSJ again was the first team to score a run - this time it came in the first inning. Loschiavo made it onto first base after being walked to open the top of the first inning. Cras bunted and reached first on a fielder's choice, which advanced Loschiavo to second. Quezada singled to left field to advance Loschiavo to third on the batted ball. Rumora hit a sacrifice fly, sending Loschiavo home on defense's indifference, allowing the Saints to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wolfpack responded in the bottom of the first with two runs thanks to a well hit single by Allen. Brandon Wilson Jr. and Jesse Jordan scored on the batted ball to take a 2-1 lead. In the second inning, Loyola extended their lead when Luke LaCosta his a double to right center to send Biehl home.
In the top of the sixth inning, Loschiavo ledd off with a double to left field. Cras then singled up the middle of the field, which allowed Loschiavo to round the bases and score CSJ's second run. The Fighting Saints defense forced Loyola into a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth, but were unable score in the top of the seventh, thwarting a comeback win.
