One year ago, CSJ and the Wolfpack paired up for a doubleheader that tilted in favor of Loyola. Each game was decided by merely one run, with Loyola taking the first game 3-2 and the second 10-9. In the first contest, the Fighting Saints rallied to tie the game at two in the top of the seventh inning, however the Wolfpack was able to prevent extra innings and secure the win with a score in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore pitcher Alexander Acevedo closed for Loyola. Seniors Ben Condara and Spencer Rosenbohm tallied one RBI apiece. John Loschiavo, then a freshman, and Petar Rumora, then a sophomore, each scored a run for the Saints. CSJ tallied three hits collectively in the loss.
In the second contest against Loyola on Feb. 21, 2017, the majority of scoring happened early on for both teams. CSJ began with two runs scored in the first inning and the Wolfpack answered with four in the bottom of the inning. Inning two turned out one run for the Fighting Saints and two for Loyola. Trailing 6-3 going into the third, CSJ turned out a four-run inning of their own and took a 7-6 lead. Both teams went scoreless on their next turns at the plate before Loyola tied the game at seven in the bottom of the fourth.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Saints notched two runs to take a 9-7 lead going into the seventh inning. CSJ was unable to score in the top of the seventh and Loyola managed to tally three runs in their final turn at-bat to secure the 10-9 victory. Acevedo once again closed for the Wolfpack and earned the win. Jason Roussel led Loyola's pitcher with two strikeouts.
CSJ's Rumora notched one RBI and scored two runs and Brian Quezada recorded two hits. Mauricio Rondon also recorded a hit. Classmate Ryan Cummings pitched the majority of the game against Delgado on Feb. 16, wherein CSJ trailed 5-0 after four innings. The Fighting Saints' defense prevented the Dolphins from scoring another run for the remainder of the game, and in the seventh inning the Saints were finally able to get on the scoreboard. With the bases loaded, Jion Cras hit a single to allow Loschiavo to score the first run of the inning and get CSJ on the board, though still trailing 5-1.
Rumora was walked on the next at-bat, sending Quezada home for a run. With the bases loaded still, Delgado walked CSJ's Rondon to send Bobby Pena home and make it a 5-3 ballgame.
